Buzz, Buzz

May 1st, 2007

I've been a busy bee today and life is good. Yesterday, I was slammed by a migraine that destroyed most of my day. Partly, I think I was just recovering from a very social (for me) weekend. But today, I felt much better and the day seemed to go so smoothly. It felt good.

The weekend mixed media workshop was great. I got to play and meet some great people. I loved the teacher. She was so supportive and down to earth. Just to have met her was worth it. Yes, I've done a lot of mixed media work before, but I still learned a ton. Like the way she applied matte medium with a palette knife was awesome! I learned another way to do transfers, I got an intro to encaustics (transfers on wax are awesome!) and I made art on a piece of birch plywood for the first time which was very cool.

This piece, "Between Spaces", was made on  a thick canvas, 12"x16". It was made fairly quickly, just intuitively putting it together with paint and collage elements. At the end, the teacher said, she liked the combination of wide open spaces with smaller enclosed spaces. When she said that, I was reminded of a project I did in school trying to represent my love of both small enclosed spaces (like the little boxes I collect) and wide open spaces (like the ocean) that make me feel a sense of the sublime. I couldn't really get the idea across then, but this does gets it across. She said she also liked small containers and wide open spaces and this is why she responded to it. This piece also makes me think of the textures of home, the textures of a family. I'll share more art later in the week. I think I want to keep working on a couple of them.

I got to dance a bit with the fiansor tonight (very silly jumping around kind of dancing) for Jamie's virtual dance event. It's always good to start off the month with some dancing. :-) I'm looking forward to a happy-dancing-kind-of-month.

I like this collage a lot Leah. I hope you have a happy-dancing-kind-of-month, too :) As, a matter-of-fact, I want one too, it sounds so good! Let’s do it!

this is lovely and very much along the lines of what I would like to find – collage and areas of color – I am so happy to visit and find once again your heartfelt writing that inspires so much – you are a deep and wonderful soul and I am so glad that I can visit you – please also visit me too

This collage is really beautiful and the workshop you attended sounds like it was an amazing experience. Sounds like a good week indeed! :)

This is different for me, I’m not really into mixed media collage, but I’m learning to appreciate it. I like your creation.
Glad you got to dance away with the fiansor – Must have been fun!

So often I look at abstract collages and find them fascinating, and I then I want to make one. But I freeze up. Not sure why. I’m afraid it will just look like random bits of paper with no theme or idea underlying. This inspires me. Maybe I’ll give it a try. BTW, I think this would make a cool 4 x 6″ postcard, or a greeting card.

I LOVE mixed media collage – this one is brilliant. I love the intricacies and this piece reminded me of one of my favorite painters, Robert Ryman. Gorgeous, girlfriend.

Coool – I have a thing for small boxes too, which I collect,AND for wide open spaces. I haven’t found a way to combine them yet…
This reminds me of some boxes I did at art college years ago… I shall have to dig them out and post a photo on my blog.
Thanks Leah!
Glad you had fun playing on the course.

Creating, dancing, learnin’ – wonderful! I’m sorry that the migraine slipped in their somehow! I hope it has long passed. Thanks so much for sharing the dance!

I guess at some point I should just go ahead and take a collage workshop and get some of the basic stuff down instead of stabbing at it in the dark…Anything with a palette knife works for me! As always, my eye is drawn to the words…and to the postage stamps. That’s another thing I like in collages. But mainly words – which is why I so love yours!

Leah,
your pieces are showing such growth, it’s truely amazing. Love every piece.
