Day 11 – Sirens II

November 11th, 2007

There's one thing I do get about series, they can take you unexpected places. I learned this in a drawing class in college where the teacher would give us homework of doing big drawings (at least 18"x24") of one object. We'd have to do 20 big drawings in a week. I remember choosing a pair of scissors and after the first initial stiff drawings, I started to really loosen up. I drew those scissors with wild perspective, with dripping ink, in a surreal setting. They were awesome. So, sometimes, taking an idea past the initial one can lead to interesting places. The talented Wyanne, suggested I do the sirens from yesterday in collage form, so today, I did! It was fun.

It's been kinda fun being at work this weekend. I loved spending time with the sweet dogs there especially. They've been so sweet and lovey, like snuggly shadows, always close by.  It's so funny and wonderful how dogs will adore you. What is that quote? Ah, here it is: In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him. - Dereke Bruce

But I'm glad I'm going home tomorrow. I like how my cats have a mind of their own and visit when they are good and ready. :-) Here's some more fun kitty quotes for ya:

When your kitty purrs to you, doesn't it break your heart that you can't purr back?  ~Candea Core-Starke

I love cats because I love my home and after a while they become its visible soul.  ~Jean Cocteau

There are few things in life more heartwarming than to be welcomed by a cat.  ~Tay Hohoff

The problem with cats is that they get the exact same look on their face whether they see a moth or an axe-murderer.  ~Paula Poundstone

Are we really sure the purring is coming from the kitty and not from our very own hearts?  ~Emme Woodhull-Bäche, translated

The sirens is absolutely beautiful….what a terrific collage…it feels so freeing…
Love the colors…thanks so much for sharing it and the great cat quotes…

I loved the sirens yesterday, and even more today. I wish my hair would do that.

Your work never ceases to amaze me. Where do you come up with all the collage elements in your work? Are they photocopies of original scraps, or are they original scraps.

Inquiring minds want to know! *teehee*

(But seriously, I would like to know because I want to delve into collage and mixed media in my own art but have no idea where to start and no one to show me the ropes.)

*hugs*

hi leah…i would love to be added to your list of participants. it’s playtime!

diane, digital art is great. glad you’re joining in!!

well, i’m a bit of a pack-rat (which is why my cleaning/purging of my office/studio is taking SO long!) I collect interesting bits of paper, from receipts to flyers to stamps. In this particular collage, I used a piece of patterned paper that came in a pack of patterned papers (that’s the red patterned paper torn into pieces), the music is from a bag i saved from a music store, there’s a photocopy of a photo of trees, a piece of sand paper (i like the color of it!), there are pieces of an old book, a piece of an envelope that i liked the color of, and a little piece of color from a magazine image. I have an unbelievable amount of paper scraps in folders and boxes and as I rip them up, I hold on to the smallest pieces because they often come in handy for collages, just bits of textures and colors and patterns.

This painting is gorgeous. I had the pleasure of finding your blog through the creative bloggers site and will stop back to view more entries.

Interesting piece, Leah. I liked the first one too with the Blue Suprise at the top. I liked your thoughts on series paintings/drawings. It does take you to new places, doesnt it?

They are breathtaking! Words are not enough. I love what you did with them! I think you are on to something here! A new series perhaps? Wonderful, wonderful, inspiring work. Love it, love you. XoxoxoxX!!!!! Made my morning….

I like seeing the change from a drawing to a collage. The depth you created with the collage is great. Sometime could you post a couple of pictures of a collage in process? I’m fairly new at the collages and would love to see how you get from the beginning to the end.

This one is gorgeous! I love all the beautiful and vibrant colors in it. Love all the kitty-cat quotes too. Aren’t they the best?!??

xo,

Karen Beth :)

Ooo-la-la…love this piece..firey! And…what a nice surprise to see the spirit-energy gently imparting her blessings. I love how you create!

I really like this version of the original idea. Love the circles and the interweavings of forms. Also though I like all the cat quotes, Paula Poundstone’s just cracks me up as does she. Does she have a book out? Or did you remember this quote from one of her comedy routines if she has them which I think she does.

redheads rule! hehe. of course, i’m biased!

I have had this page up all day as I was staying here (in a tab) to link to your blog in my post today. Each time I looked at this picture, I have loved it more … the lines, the colors, the depth – it is just plain gorgeous!!!

I am all caught up on my posts now! Progress can be seen here: http://www.alittlearteveryday.blogspot.com

I love how you transformed the images from the other day into this new form. Very cool. And thanks for sharing your collage tips. I save the tiniest pieces of paper, too! Some people think I’m weird, but you never know when you’ll find just the right place for it ;)

Hey Leah, this is a wonderful collage, I just love the colours. And the quotes about kitties are especially lovely, I so laughed about how kitties eyes look at the moth or ax-murderer….

The sirenes’ red is awsome.
Have a great evening
Andrea

Wow! Great Art!! I struggle with the whole “one voice” thing artists are supposed to have that you were talking about in your last post. When I see your subway series, the memory trees and your sirens, or paintings of women I think it would be such a sad thing if they didn’t all exist. It’s a good point on how it helps one loosen up, but I think we’d also lack the joy that fuels inspiration to pull of a stellar piece like this one if we ever got too strict. Excellent work, Leah
