CED June Theme: Sound
May 26th, 2009
The *totally optional* theme for the Creative Every Day Challenge in June will be Sound!
This theme may be a stretch for some of you, but I encourage you to play with it.
How can you use this theme in your creations? Well, you could use the previous themes to help you brainstorm by getting playful and writing all the ways you could intepret the theme. Perhaps you will dream in colorful song? Or perhaps you will begin exploring the the sounds of your natural environment?
I will be posting about the theme throughout the month with different ways to approach it. If you need some suggestions, here are a few ideas to get you started. You could:
- *Make art inspired by a song or song lyric.
- *Create art to music and see how the type of music you listen to impacts your creations.
- *Explore making your own music.
- *Try sound healing.
- *Read poems out loud.
- *Sing (in the shower, in the car, with your kids, in public.)
- *Use guided visualizations in your art.
- *Pay attention to the sounds in your environment and reflect on them in your creations.
- *Make a recording of your voice to post on your blog (I'm planning to do this!)
How to use the CED themes:
If you're feeling creatively stuck or blocked at any point during the month, use the theme as a source of inspiration to get you moving.
Using the theme is entirely optional for CED participants. Use it if it inspires you, ignore it if it doesn't. I'll be sharing posts throughout the month around the theme (among other things) to get you thinking about how to incorporate it into your life. I'd love to hear how you use the theme in your creative world.
Feel free to focus on the theme in your creative activities for the entire month or as much as you'd like.
And have fun with it!

I have not finished my Nature challenge yet. Just got my last colour piece finished and post on my blog. Now Sound challenge. Great ideas.

Oooooh, I love this month’s theme, Leah. I was *just* thinking that all the ways I’ve played with sound recently — by chanting, singing Sacred Harp, and making improvised music with my company Wing It! — are all on hiatus. And I’ve had this wierd “energy lump” in my throat, which says to me that something in my voice is waiting to be opened up. How perfect to play with voice and art. I’ve even been thinking about posting weekly videos on my blog of me playing with voice and words in crazy ways — maybe I’ll push myself to follow through with this, in celebration of “sound” month.

I plan on playing one of Enya’s songs, closing my eyes and letting my pencil go where it wants. After the song is over I will look at the picture and see what pops out at me, filling it with color and perhaps collage. I learned this in an Art Picnic class.

You know, this prompt felt very challenging for me, but now that I read your post and think about it, perhaps it doesn’t mean I have to paint “sound.” Perhaps I can look at sound in other forms. For instance, every night, I have been singing to my kids before bed. Sometimes I play the guitar (badly, I am teaching myself.) I have also started storytelling, as the boy wants stories about aliens nightly, now.
This is good, because I don’t want to only paint. I want to live creatively, so paying attention to the creativity in other parts of my life is a good thing.

This should be easy for me. I’m surrounded by sound all the time. I have a toddler and a pre-schooler. My home is always filled with sound of some sort be it joyful or un-nerving… So why is this so hard for me? Thanks for challenging brain and my creativity.

We rent a house in Mexico, and our landlord is a good friend who 30 years ago belonged to a group of professional musicians and singers who toured all over Mexico and the US. The remnants of the group who live locally have been getting together for reunions, and my guitarist husband and I have been invited to join them. One singer, Lolita, has been my Spanish tutor and singing coach for the past three years, so I do duets in harmony with her. It’s quite a Spanish immersion experience, a lot of fun, and a creative stretch for me because we’re not using sheet music, and I have to work out the alto part of the songs in my head as we go along. My husband has a similar challenge: working out the bass lines for songs while our landlord plays the guitar lead. Seems to work, the applause is enthusiastic. Last night we rehearsed with the group and tonight we perform at another reunion. It certainly makes me want to improve my Spanish, so I can understand more of the conversations!
