Wonderful sunny day here on the farm in Ontario! I’ll be working on artwork of the Ker Church ground for the NiagaraHERE project and will post images on my blog as I work. Also, I donated a painting to a local gallery run by artists, so will post about their upcoming Silent Auction. Have a creative week everyone!

Getting back into the ritual of the studio. By the way, does anyone have any resources or techniques for figuring out what art to make? I’ve got lots of skills (painting, collage, stitch, etc) but when I try to articulate what subjects inspire me I seem to hit a wall. I’m sure I’m not alone in this . . . help please!

Hi Erin,
Couple recommendations for inspiration for art work for you:
Carry a camera and sketchbook with you and just draw and snap photos of everything around you. Things that to others seem mundane can be great inspiration. The act of sketching keeps your artistic sensibilities engaged, so the more you draw, even if you don’t think what you are drawing is something you will use for a final piece of artwork, the more receptive you will be to ideas for artwork. Get out of the creative block by just creating without the end product in mind.
Also, Art Synectics by Nicholas Roukes is a great book to get ideas and inpiration. I used it when I taught high school art, and it really got kids out of a rut and brought out their creativity.

I’m working on getting back to my writing, and it’s taking some organization, planning, and obsession. So I’m making a planner to work on the steps that I need to take to finish my book. There are some things I’m frightened of in there. I need to pin those down and find some way to get through them.

It’s been a kind of mania, but a happy one. I HAVE been creative every day; I’ve been finishing things every 2-3 days or so, pretty good for me.

The wider I keep the definition of creative, the more free I feel each day. I am enjoying the daily reshifting of my mindset to allow myself to revision what being creative is. And as I do that, I find I have more and more time for what I would traditionally have considered creative. I think it’s because I’m having more fun tackling projects that have stymied and sucked up energy and stalled my general activities. But the more creative approach I take, the more I get done, the more I am able to do. Life is opening up. On good days. Some days are still stymied, but few and fewer. Thanks for the help.

I decided back in December (2011) that I was going to write a poem every day during 2012, so finding your blog and Creative Every Day project was a delightful surprise! So far this year I have written 118 poems, and today is the 113th day, so I’m hanging in there. My most recent blog article is about “Dealing With the Dry Spells,” and your monthly themes will certainly give me new things to think about as I continue my own quest!
My blog is not just about my poem a day project, although there are some poems posted there. I write about many different things, but creativity is embedded in many different forms, in most of my writing. I have put your widget in my sidebar because I feel truly linked to your ideas. Thank you for what you do!
