Creative Every Day Theme for July: Round

June 30th, 2012, Comments (10)

At the end of each month I will announce the totally optional theme for the following month. For the month of July 2012, the theme will be Round.

As always, this month's theme for the Creative Every Day Challenge is totally optional. Use it if it inspires you, continue being creative every day in your own way if it doesn't, or do something in between. You can sign up for the 2012 Creative Every Day Challenge anytime. More info can be found here and the sign-up page is here.

As I think of this theme, all I can think about is a bit of a Rumi poem:

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don't go back to sleep.

Beautiful, yes?

I'll be posting about the theme throughout the month on the blog to help keep you inspired. You can use the posts here for jumping off points or interpret the theme in your own creative way. If you need some suggestions, here are a few ideas to get you started. You could:

  • *Focus on round shapes like the moon and sun in your work.
  • *Create a round piece of art.
  • *Work with an embroidery hoop.
  • *Cover a page with teeny tiny circles.
  • *Trace round shapes (cups, bottle caps, bowls) on paper and work within them.
  • *Write about the roundness of the body.

How to use the CED themes:

If you're feeling creatively stuck or blocked at any point during the month, use the theme as a source of inspiration to get you moving. Feel free to focus on the theme in your creative activities for the entire month or as much as you'd like.

Using the theme is entirely optional for CED participants. Use it if it inspires you, ignore it if it doesn't. I'll be sharing posts throughout the month around the theme (among other things) to get you thinking about how to incorporate it into your life. I'd love to hear how you use the theme in your creative world.

And have fun with it!

Did you ever find that there is room between the two opposing rules of a paradox? That space between two almost opposite rules is the ground where I play and write. ~Mu Xin

The Weight of Walking

I had a brief pocket of time today, just ten minutes actually, and I used it to do a little free form painting. Ah, that felt good.

I used the opposites theme as a jumping off point, starting with black paper and white paint.

One, a little late

June 10th, 2012, Comments (11)

I did these pieces for the one theme and I'm just now getting around to posting them. Life has been busy! I was working with a blue monochromatic background to go along with the one theme of last month and later went into them with white ink to bring out these images, Bucket and Trailing Stars. They feel like a pair to me. And ah-ha! They also work for the Opposite theme this month, with one figure looking up and one looking down!
