Art Every Day Month 2018 Sign Up

October 5th, 2018, Comments (97)

Art Every Day Month is once again right around the corner! This will be the 17th year I have been creating daily for the month of November and inviting others to join in. Art Every Day Month (AEDM) is a low pressure challenge for anyone who wants to challenge themselves to create daily for a month. Low pressure means if you miss a day, brush yourself off, and get back to it. No worries. By art, I'm talking a broad view. You could be cooking, taking pictures, dancing, writing music, crafting for the holidays, painting, sculpting, writing poetry, making jewelry, sewing, knitting, art journaling, you name it. You could decide to do a small 2"x2" drawing each day or you could do something different every day. Up to you! I tend to do more drawing and painting because that's what I like, but you can follow your heart. This year, I think I'll mix painting in with children's book illustration. Take some time this month to think about what you might like to work on or just show up and create!

If you're on Facebook, join the Facebook group where you can share your creations as well. If you're on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook you can use the hashtag #arteverydaymonth2018. I'll also have a daily post here starting November 1st, where you can share links to creations you've made.

Read more about the challenge here and then sign up below by leaving a comment. If you have a blog, website, flickr page, or instagram handle where you'll be sharing, share that below in the Mr. Linky form. If you aren't sharing your work online, then just leave a comment on this blog post saying that you're participating.

The challenge begins November 1st!

Breaking Up with Busy

July 2nd, 2018, Comments (0)

I recently finished reading a review copy of Breaking Up with Busy: Real Life Solutions for Overscheduled Women by Yvonne Tally.

While I do tend toward feeling so busy, the parts of the book discussing how to move away from busied behavior was less helpful for me than all the tips on goal setting and self-care.

Yvonne Tally says a panic attack, brought on by stress, led her to reassess her life and take a more mindful approach to her life. This is so common and relatable! Recently in an interview with Jonathan Fields on the Tilt Parenting podcast, Fields noted that you don't take time for yourself, the body will force you to take that time. And when that happens, it will take more time to recover than if you had made your self-care a priority earlier.

What I especially liked in the book was the coaching style questions that got me thinking about my goals, what I'm getting out of not reaching those goals, what I will get out of making changes, taking doable actions, and imagining the results. Tally also has a great breakdown of the want/need connection. Dissecting what you need to get what you want and then looking at why you want that now is powerful.

I've been so into combining visualization with meditation lately, so her suggestions on that front were great timing. Creativity and a big imagination has good sides and bad sides. I think creative people are often quite good at imagining worst case scenarios in vivid detail. I like how Tally suggests combining meditation with storytelling and imagination in a positive way. Whether you believe in the power of attraction or not, I find the practice to be relaxing and empowering. And certainly a better than letting my imagination wander into worry!

There are loads of great ideas in this book. It's worth checking out!

Children’s Stories

June 27th, 2018, Comments (1)

I've been working away at my children's story ideas. One of them involves, Tangle Fairies, troublesome sprites that snarl up your hair at night. I've been so focused on the writing and revising, but it felt like time to do some drawing and figure out what my characters look like!

New art

May 10th, 2018, Comments (2)

Hello, creatives! I have some new work to share with you.

First up, a painting I made for a friend of mine who loves her sweet little dog. I don't think she'll see this before I give it to her. Hope not, it's a surprise! It was fun to paint.

Next a painting I made recently, based on an image that popped into my head. It's called "Sleepwalking." The ground is meant to look like the night sky.

And lastly, this piece was created for a friend of a friend, who was in a horrific car accident in which two children passed. I can't imagine what these families are going through, just painting this was emotional. But I hope this brings them a small amount of peace.
