Creative Every Day Theme for July 2015

July 2nd, 2015, No Comments

At the end of each month I will announce the totally optional theme for the following month. July's theme is Slow. And apparently I've taken it to heart, sorry for being slow with this post and check-in this week. Summer always seems like a time to slow down a bit. We are all sick here again, so the pace has definitely slowed down, but we're also enjoying lazier days with the sprinkler and popsicles and bare feet.

As always, this month's theme for the Creative Every Day Challenge is totally optional. Use it if it inspires you, continue being creative every day in your own way if it doesn't, or do something in between. You can sign up for the 2015 Creative Every Day Challenge anytime. More info can be found here and the sign-up page is here.

When time allows, I'll be posting about the theme to help keep you inspired. You can use the posts here for jumping off points or interpret the theme in your own creative way. If you need some suggestions, here are a few ideas to get you started. You could:

  • *How can you slow down this month?
  • *Paint with slow, lazy brushstrokes.
  • *Slow down while you eat, enjoy each bite.
  • *Take a slow walk with a camera and capture what you see when you're going at a slower pace.
  • *Write a poem about moving more slowly.

How to use the CED themes:

If you're feeling creatively stuck or blocked at any point during the month, use the theme as a source of inspiration to get you moving. Feel free to focus on the theme in your creative activities for the entire month or as much as you'd like.

Using the theme is entirely optional for CED participants. Use it if it inspires you, ignore it if it doesn't. I'll be sharing posts throughout the month around the theme (among other things) to get you thinking about how to incorporate it into your life. I'd love to hear how you use the theme in your creative world.

And have fun with it!

Let the Elephants Run

June 5th, 2015, One Comment

My inspiration for the Boundaries theme this month was a book I was recently sent, Let the Elephants Run: Unlock Your Creativity and Change Everything by David Usher. I've read a lot of books about creativity, so combined with a low attention span driven by life with tiny children, it takes a lot to truly capture my interest. Well, this book did. The way it's written in short bursts with bold graphics, caught my eye immediately. And the messages and action steps spoke to me. I found myself nodding a lot and thinking and then sketching out a big idea I've had in my head for weeks.

The boundaries theme was inspired by this quote: "Pushing hard on the boundaries and being 'experimental' may not be where you need your imagination to live full-time for your creativity to function, but there is great value in being able to visit this place once in a while. The ability to vacation our imagination on the edge gives us the ability to expand our mind, opening us up to a whole world of possibility."

Creative Every Day Theme for June: Boundaries

May 31st, 2015, 2 Comments

At the end of each month I will announce the totally optional theme for the following month. June's theme is Boundaries

You could:

  • *Explore your personal boundaries in free form writing.
  • *How can you push the boundaries of your work this month?
  • *Play with the idea of the boundaries of a place with maps.
  • *Push your comfort zone boundaries and use an unusual palette.
  • *Play with pushing boundaries through scale, either very large or very small pieces.
