Day 3 – Dandelion Wishes

November 3rd, 2007, Comments (17)

A spontaneous painting. I sat down with a 6"x6" gallery wrapped canvas and some paint, picked out some colors that called my name and started. This is what came out. The colors I chose were influenced in part by my memory of this photo by dotintime I saw today on the AEDM flickr group. Funny part is that my memory of the picture's colors are quite different from what they actually are, but that's o.k. Heh. Anyways, it's a quite different color scheme than I normally use, but I do love me some dandelions and I enjoy the pinkish-brown tones and golds with some blue/purple/brown in the background. I layered colors and textures and tried to let go and play, then step away and re-assess and then play again.

Today was a rainy, windy day in New England. A lovely day to stay in my jammies and snuggle up with kitties. I watched "Dreamgirls" today and totally loved it. I sang along and cried and laughed. Totally enjoyed it. Jennifer Hudson was incredible! Wowza. Overall, it was a great girly movie for a day on the couch.

Day 2 of AEDM – Alice and the Bluebird

This piece is 9"x12" with collage and acrylic on watercolor paper. I had a sketch on the back of a receipt that was the inspiration for this image, although it took on a new feel when I collaged a page from an old copy of Alice in Wonderland into the background. Other collaged elements included a foreign stamp, instructions for a children's game and a page from an old girl scout's guide book (books purchased at a flea market in Maine) and a page torn from a recipe book with lovely handwritten script.

I kept fussing with the background, adding elements and wiping them away, but it made a nice texture at least. The bird turned blue at the last moment. In the detail you can get a better look at the rabbit. Cute, isn't he?

I had a productive day today, getting some art out the door and making updates to the website. More on that tomorrow, perhaps. Have a fantastic weekend, every one!

Flickr Group

I've set up a new AEDM Flickr group for Art Every Day Month here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/565525@N21/

Feel free to join and post your creations there, but it's not required!

Anything creative that you've made during the challenge is great. I know that there has been a photography group on flickr created that was inspired by this challenge, but I just wanted to be sure that everyone knows that photography is absolutely included in the realm of Art Every Day Month! Anything creative counts.

I love all the creating I've seen so far! Such great variety and so much inspiration!  I'm off to look some more before I head off to sleep.

Art Day One – Women of the Forest

November 1st, 2007, Comments (20)

This piece was started spontaneously with no big goal in mind, but it ended up very far from where it started. I wanted to do something in encaustic which I've only had a brief introduction to, but which I'm very interested in. On a wood panel, I painted on the wax, fused it with a heat gun, let it cool and then tried to do some transfers with photocopies. I had some problems with the transfers though. The first few I tried didn't come out at all. I'm not sure what I did differently, but it made me take the whole thing in a new direction. I tried another transfer with a little more success. I started working on it then with one large tree trunk in which the women lived, but they later became part of separate trees. From the start I had the idea of the past encaustic pieces I've done in the past that had to do with Alzheimer's, memory, my grandmother and family trees. These women are not from family photos, but they made me think of my grandmother's sisters and how she's the only one to suffer from this disease. I used oil stick to apply color and carved into the wax to create the trees.

It's 8"x10" on cradled panel. This happens so often where the end result is so far from the starting point. It's always best when I can let go and go with the flow, to let go of my expectations and let what wants to come, come. Sometimes, that takes practice and sometimes it takes knowing that I can toss it if I hate it in the end. I do enjoy the surprise of what comes when I let it though!

Happy Art Every Day Month to all you creative folks out there!!
