Shadow and Time

August 21st, 2012, Comments (5)

I've been musing a lot on time in the last few days, partly because of the 137 Days project I've joined, led by the fabulous Patti Digh (more on that later). And it made me want to share this shadow picture from a year ago, I called it "tuning fork legs" at the time. Shadows are so fun. I love noticing them when I'm out for a jog in the morning.

I happened upon this year-ago-photo because of a neat (and free) service called Timehop, which will email you each day with your instagram photos (and/or Facebook, Twitter, and Four Square posts) from a year ago. This has been especially fun because I took so many instagram photos of Annabelle over the last 15 months and it's fun to see what we were doing exactly one year ago each day. My, how she's grown!

Creative Every Day Theme for August: Shadow

July 31st, 2012, Comments (10)

At the end of each month I will announce the totally optional theme for the following month. For the month of August 2012, the theme will be Shadow. Thank you to Kristen of the spirit that moves me for the theme suggestion!

As always, this month's theme for the Creative Every Day Challenge is totally optional. Use it if it inspires you, continue being creative every day in your own way if it doesn't, or do something in between. You can sign up for the 2012 Creative Every Day Challenge anytime. More info can be found here and the sign-up page is here.

I'll be posting about the theme throughout the month on the blog to help keep you inspired. You can use the posts here for jumping off points or interpret the theme in your own creative way. If you need some suggestions, here are a few ideas to get you started. You could:

  • *Take your camera out on a sunny day to capture your shadow or the shadows of other objects.
  • *Trace the shadow of your body or another object on a piece of paper and use it to start a piece.
  • *Write about your shadow self.
  • *Focus on the contrast of light and shadow in your work.
  • *Sit in the shadows of a tall tree and dream up some creative plans.
  • *Trying shadowing someone as they move.

How to use the CED themes:

If you're feeling creatively stuck or blocked at any point during the month, use the theme as a source of inspiration to get you moving. Feel free to focus on the theme in your creative activities for the entire month or as much as you'd like.

Using the theme is entirely optional for CED participants. Use it if it inspires you, ignore it if it doesn't. I'll be sharing posts throughout the month around the theme (among other things) to get you thinking about how to incorporate it into your life. I'd love to hear how you use the theme in your creative world.

And have fun with it!

52 Photos Project

July 26th, 2012, Comments (8)

Playing on Instagram recently, I discovered Bella Cirovic's 52 Photos Project. Each week is given a one word theme and the opportunity to capture and share a photo of that theme.

Sadly, I saw the project after the theme "Circle" was used, which fit so nicely with this month's round theme, but no matter, you can still capture photographs with a circular theme now or move on to a this week's theme, which is "white." I took this picture last week for their "growth" theme. That's my little Annabelle standing in front of her growth chart tree that I painted on the wall. I just started adding the leaves marking her height with white contact paper.

Writing aRound and a Giveaway!

July 24th, 2012, Comments (35)

Another idea to play with the round theme before the month is up is to gather with a few friends (or do this via email) and write in a round. You could each write a line (or paragraph) of a story (or poem) before passing it to the next and marvel at where it goes!

I once did this idea with 5 canvases and 5 friends. Each person started a canvas and played with it for about 30 minutes before passing it on to the next person. We worked on the canvases throughout the day, eventually ending up with the canvas we started with, an original piece of art touched by many hands. So fun!

There are loads of fun ideas, prompts and inspiring tidbits in A Year of Writing Dangerously by Barbara Abercrombie. A great style for writers looking for daily inspiration, the book has 365 short essays, a bit of inspiration for each day of the year. And at the book there is a list of 52 writing prompts, one for each week of the year. If you're feeling stuck or unsure where to begin, this book will surely give you something to run with.

One of the suggestions that reminded me of the circular theme this month was day 29, titled "First things first." The author mentions writer, John Irving, who writes his last sentence first. That blew my mind! But what a great idea, to start with the ending and then work your way back to it.

Would you like a copy of A Year of Living Dangerously? Simply leave a comment (make sure to include your email address, so I can contact you) and I'll select a winner by Friday, July 27th. Good luck!

Update: We have a winner! Congrats to Becky!
