Art Every Day Month is coming soon!

September 27th, 2012, 5 Comments

Believe it or not, it's almost November and Art Every Day Month is right around the corner!

For those not familiar with the challenge, about 10 years ago, I was inspired by Nanowrimo (National novel writing month) to create a month long challenge of my own with art. The first year, I did the challenge on my own, posting piece of art (or a larger work in progress) every day on my blog during the month of November. The next year, a few people joined in with me and since then, the challenge has grown to include hundreds of creative people, committing to a month of creativity. It's amazing! Every year, I find myself inspired and uplifted through the process of creating and sharing every day and through seeing the work of others.

When I say art, I mean it in the broadest sense possible. There have been people who have written a poem every day, taken photographs, painted, made jewelry, done mandalas or doodles, sewn, knit, cooked, some mix of creative acts, and so on. Sky is the limit.

I like to challenge people to jump into the challenge, but I also want it to work for you, so make it your own. Post your creations once a week (or not at all if you don't have a place to share them online), if you fall off the wagon, jump back on when you can. The main thing I want from AEDM (Art Every Day Month) is to bring more creativity into the world. Why not join me?

You can learn more about the challenge here and sign up for Art Every Day Month 2012 here.

And if you need a little extra help, you can sign up for the Art Every Day Month Survival Guide, a private blog, where I'll share a post each day for the 30 days of November filled with prompts, quotes, inspiration, a weekly audio exercise to help you stay on track.

Creative Every Day Check-In: September 24 – 30

September 24th, 2012, 7 Comments

Art Every Day Month is fast approaching! I hope you're excited. I am! I will have the sign up page for 2012 up later this week.

This weekly check-in post is a place for Creative Every Day Challenge participants to share their creative activities.

Join in the Challenge: You can now sign-up for the 2012 Challenge here!

Ways to share: Once you've signed up, you can leave a comment on this post and/or use the "Mr. Linky" widget below to link to a blog post(s) about your creative activities during the days of 9/24/12 - 9/30/12.

The widget below is an optional method of sharing your creativity that makes it easier for others to check out what you're up to. You can use it to link to a blog post (or posts) or flickr image during the week listed. Or if you have a bunch of posts and don't want to link to all of them, you can link to your main blog page once. Do it in a way that makes sense and is fun for you! If you're unsure about how to use the widget, check out the "How to use the Mr. Linky widget" section on the Creative Every Day Challenge page. (If you're reading this in a RSS reader or email subscription, you will not see the "Mr. Linky widget", so click on over to the blog to use it.) If the Mr. Linky widget is missing from this blog post, it's probably a problem with their server and it will come back as soon as it's fixed. You can always leave your link in the comments.

You can also take advantage of the great CED flickr group to post your images and see what others are up to. If you're on Twitter, you can use the hashtag #CED2012!

Inspired by an essay in Patti Digh's upcoming book, The Geography of Loss, I created this piece recently. I've found that you do get stronger from experiences of walking through the fire. This was painted with acrylic on paper.

Creative Every Day Theme for September: Time

August 28th, 2012, 16 Comments

At the end of each month I will announce the totally optional theme for the following month. For the month of August 2012, the theme will be Time.

As always, this month's theme for the Creative Every Day Challenge is totally optional. Use it if it inspires you, continue being creative every day in your own way if it doesn't, or do something in between. You can sign up for the 2012 Creative Every Day Challenge anytime. More info can be found here and the sign-up page is here.

I'll be posting about the theme throughout the month on the blog to help keep you inspired. You can use the posts here for jumping off points or interpret the theme in your own creative way. If you need some suggestions, here are a few ideas to get you started. You could:

  • *Play with the idea of the time of your life in a piece of art or writing.
  • *Work with a time limit. Set the timer for 10 minutes, and create something.
  • *Focus on what your favorite time of day to create is. Why is that?
  • *Place the image of clocks or calendars in your work.
  • *Write about your challenges in making time to create. What are some simple solutions to those challenges?
  • *Is there a time period that you wish you could visit? Use that time as your inspiration.

How to use the CED themes:

If you're feeling creatively stuck or blocked at any point during the month, use the theme as a source of inspiration to get you moving. Feel free to focus on the theme in your creative activities for the entire month or as much as you'd like.

Using the theme is entirely optional for CED participants. Use it if it inspires you, ignore it if it doesn't. I'll be sharing posts throughout the month around the theme (among other things) to get you thinking about how to incorporate it into your life. I'd love to hear how you use the theme in your creative world.

And have fun with it!

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. ~Steve Jobs

Shadow and Time

August 21st, 2012, 5 Comments

I've been musing a lot on time in the last few days, partly because of the 137 Days project I've joined, led by the fabulous Patti Digh (more on that later). And it made me want to share this shadow picture from a year ago, I called it "tuning fork legs" at the time. Shadows are so fun. I love noticing them when I'm out for a jog in the morning.

I happened upon this year-ago-photo because of a neat (and free) service called Timehop, which will email you each day with your instagram photos (and/or Facebook, Twitter, and Four Square posts) from a year ago. This has been especially fun because I took so many instagram photos of Annabelle over the last 15 months and it's fun to see what we were doing exactly one year ago each day. My, how she's grown!
