Inkblot Twins

November 27th, 2010, Comments (14)

I'm totally tuckered out from family time and I'm still in my pajamas today, surrounded by cuddly kitties who are happy to have us home. I'm enjoying these little inkblots though. It had been awhile since I'd done them and I forgot just how fun they are! So for day 27 of Art Every Day Month, here's another inkblot of a pair of Twins, in lovely dresses.

Circle Bird

I had to wait a long time to post my art for day 21 of Art Every Day Month because it took forever to dry! I decided to experiment with some glass bead gel over collage and acrylic paint. It wasn't a complete success, because something smudged and I couldn't see it until after it dried. But what I learned (and loved) is that gold paint over collage with glass bead gel looks really cool! And also, this stuff is hard to photograph! Ah well. Sometimes, you need to play and make some mistakes to move on to the next thing! This little guy is about 4"x4" on panel.

Singing Bird

I drew a little bird in my sketchbook last night, so I decided to bring it to life today for Art Every Day Month, with collage, paint, and ink. It's about 6"x7" on paper. More birdfeeder inspiration I think. Although there are mothering images in the collage, that got entirely painted over, so I think it's a mother bird as well. :-)

Held

Day 17 of Art Every Day Month. Another intuitive piece. I did the collage elements first and saw the figure so clearly! I like how the dress came together, however, I feel like I want to change the background, but for now this is where I'll stop.

The Walk

November 12th, 2010, Comments (26)

For day 12 of Art Every Day Month, I created intuitively and playfully. I didn't know where I was going, when I put ink on watercolor paper and let it drip. I let it sit for awhile and wasn't seeing anything I wanted to pull out, so I started painting over it with acrylic and let that sit for a bit until I saw an image I wanted to play with. I cropped the paper I was working on and drew in the figure.

It's was a little hard to take a picture with the shiny gold paint, but I think I got the essence of it. I'm calling it "The Walk" and it's about 6"x9" with ink and acrylic on paper.

What’s Behind

November 11th, 2010, Comments (26)

For day 11 of Art Every Day Month, I had the urge to play with collage. I put the elements together first, glued them down, and then let it sit for awhile. Eventually, a curve stood out to me that made me think of the curve of a shoulder, so I started sketching and this image came out. I was going to develope it a bit more, but decided to leave it simple. It's about 9"x12".

In the Hollow Tree and my Big/Little Announcement

November 9th, 2010, Comments (91)

For day 9 of Art Every Day Month, I wanted to do a little tribute to the magical stage of life I'm in the middle of. I'm making a baby! Now that I'm into the 2nd trimester, I decided to share the news here. The hubster and I are super excited to welcome this little one into the world sometime around May 10, 2011.

The art, "In the Hollow Tree," came to me this morning as I was thinking about how I wanted to share the news. I was drawing a figure sitting cross-legged and had the idea to draw her within a hollow tree, like the one in the woods behind my house growing up. We used to stand inside it and look up into the darkness, imagining it was some kind of portal to another world. It's about 9"x12", with acrylic and ink on watercolor paper.

Red Leap

And now for something completely different! Or at least it feels very different from what I've been up to this month so far.

For day 7 of Art Every Day Month, again, I began with an intuitive/spontaneous approach. I took a piece of rice paper and roughly traced a leaping figure in sharpie marker that I found in a magazine (changing a few elements...I gave her flowing hair.) Under her, I wrote the word "leap."

Later, I took a piece of 6"x12" canvas paper, and squirted paint directly onto it, red and golds, then sprayed some purple-ish spray onto that. When that dried, I used gel medium to put the rice paper over the painted piece. It wasn't quite as transparent as it has been with past experiments, but it made a cool effect. I let it dry, tore away the excess rice paper and voila!

The shapes in the rice paper make it look like she's leaping through a forest to me. Although all the reds make it feel like she's leaping over or through fire.

Sometimes it amazes me the things that will come flowing out, if given the time and space to do so. This piece is just right for me today.

Quiet Umbrella

Today for day 5 of Art Every Day Month, I felt the urge to work in collage. I had no idea where I was going, but this image came along as I worked. At first I thought I'd put more color into it, striped socks, colorful boots, and such. But after I painted in the figure, she seemed to want to stay this way. A little more somber. So for now, she'll stay as is, more quiet. This piece is about 4"x4" with collage and acrylic on panel. Hope you all have a beautifully creative weekend!

3 Balloon Day

November 4th, 2010, Comments (34)

This piece was based on a doodle I found in my sketchbook from months ago. Old sketchbook doodles are a great source to return to when you're feeling short on ideas!

I think the colors of the clouds were inspired by the gloomy weather outside my window. It's been windy and stormy all day long. Just now the wind actually howled!

I think a cup of cocoa is in order, don't you?

As I finished up this little painting for day 4 of Art Every Day Month, a little rhyme popped into my head:

"Today, my friends, is a 3 balloon day. It would only take 3 to float me away."

She's approximately 6"x12" with acrylic and ink on canvas paper.
